脆性断裂失效:主要是模具存在冶金缺陷,如带状组织和网状碳化物;工艺缺陷,如晶粒粗大,表面磨削烧伤,粗糙刀痕,回火不足等;或因工作过程操作不当发生超载,容易发生早期脆断失效。早期脆断的模具寿命很短,一般加工工件不超过数千件,有的寿命甚只有几十次几百次。脆性断口平齐,颜色一致。

疲劳断裂失效:主要是由于循环应力所造成的,其断裂过程要比脆断失效缓慢得多,其模具寿命在5000-10000次以上。疲劳断裂端口呈现不同区域,可看到疲劳源、疲劳扩展区和快速断裂区。疲劳断裂常见于各种重载模具,如冷挤压模。由于重载模具在施压变形过程中,模具表面的瞬时温度可达200-300℃,造成温度循环,因而加速了疲劳裂纹的蒙山。
